Gillette Sec.<br />Meeting Minutes: May 9, 1934 On the evening of May 9th, 1934 a meeting of the Library Board was held, Mr. J.R. Bush president in the chair, Mr. H.G. Strobel treasurer and Mrs. H.P. Gillette secretary being present.<br />A balance of $29.99 was reported in the treasury April 1st.<br />It was decided to secure an estimate of seeding the path thro the library lawn from N.W. corner to S.E. corner and if cost were not prohibitive to proceed with the work of closing said path to the public, temporary barriers to be erected at each end if same might be deemed advisable.<br />Also the janitor was to be instructed to use an antique copper or bronze lacquer in refinishing the fountain in the library grounds.<br />Pres. Bush reported a gift of books from the library of the late Dr. Crittenden, the same to be selected by himself at the request of Mrs. Crittenden. An inspection of the stack rooms and main reading rooms was made and it was decided to redecorate the walls of the stack rooms and paint the floor, bids on the labor to be secured. Also to ascertain cost of washing the walls in main reading rooms. Repairs on main entrance steps were also planned. The stack rooms were painted, walls and floor, and the woodwork varnished, the walls in main reading rooms were washed and the main entrance steps entirely rebuilt by Geo. Watkins, Mason. Fred Knapp was the decorator employed. On Aug. 1, the balance in the bank credited to library fund was $1412.07 and the amt. due from taxes $3332.84 which the City of Howell will deposit any day. Bush, Mr. Strobel and Mrs. Gillette being present.<br />Minutes of last meeting read and approved.<br />On recommendation of the President, the Assistant librarian Estelle Bennett and the janitor E. E. Papworth were given $5.00 per month increase respectively, making the salaries $33.80 and $65.00.<br />Literature concerning bills pending on State Aid and State Board for Libraries and a communication from the librarian of Detroit Library concerning same were read and the Board instructed the secretary to frame a resolution to the legislators of the State and present same to our Representative, Hon. Chas. P. Adams.<br />Application from Child's Conservation League for use of S.E. room in library basement for a story hour on Sat. afternoons, equipment and supervisor to be furnished by aforesaid organization was read. The request was granted with the proviso that the furniture placed in the room be suitable for adults as well as children.<br />The portion of the City Charter which states the duties of the Library Com. was read by Pres. Noble having been appt. by Mayor Adams in place of Mr. Bush, the meeting was called to order by the Secretary of the former Commission Mrs. Gillette and the election of officers followed.<br />Dr. Noble, Chairman of the board Mrs. Gillette, secretary and Mr. Strobel, treas.<br />Dr. Noble presiding, the secretary’s report was read and approved.<br />A request from Howell Woman's Club was read in which the use of rooms in the basement of the library was asked. Motion was made that the committee from the club be invited to meet with the Library Commission at the library Thurs. evening Apr. 29th for discussion of the plan. Carried. The secretary was instructed to write Mrs. W. P.
